It’s My Party..and I’ll Crash it if I Want To.

And by crash, I mean burn, burn it down to the ground.

Now let me start by saying that I am a card-carrying member of the Democratic Party. Always have been, probably always will be. That’s not to say that I can’t get down with some of the Republican ideals, I can, but as a whole party? They’ve never been my cup of tea. But boy oh boy, even I couldn’t have predicted the shit show that this party has turned into. Not even after many members of the party outright refused to condemn their party’s representative’s blatant racism and bigotry, authoritarian overtures, and just flat out ugliness. But then again? What did you expect?

Get off this Ship

Remember the builders of the titanic, the ones who said: “God himself couldn’t sink this ship?” They had the hubris to challenge God. Not only that, they refused to put more lifeboats aboard, because it would ruin the “view,” and challenge the position that the boat was indeed “unsinkable.” I don’t think I need to say what happened there (spoiler alert: the boat sank on its maiden voyage), but that’s what I liken Trump and the Republican Party too. He’s the builder, challenging the all mighty God, thinking he is like God himself, untouchable, influential, and all-powerful, not subject to conventional wisdom, and the Republicans are the idiots who chose to follow him onto the boat. The rioting that just occurred, is much like the glacier, I’m sure they could have seen it coming but were oblivious to how much damage it would cause.

So what happens now?

The Republican Party, four years ago, held a majority in the Senate, and had the President’s office, now, they're the minority in both houses, and have lost the presidency. Not to mention, Georgia turned blue. Blue! They need to break this party up. Now. Someone needs to take a stand. This party has let our outgoing President bully them for far too long. They have embarrassingly so, shown a level of cowardice that would put the Cowardly Lion to shame (The Wizard of Oz, I have children, and it’s a great book). Where’s your spine? When are you going to grow one? Half of you have either spent the last four years cheering Trump on, enabling him, and siding with him to reap the benefits of his ridiculously large base, whilst the other half has been a tad bit more sober-minded, either saying nothing at all about what’s been going down, or issuing statements that largely have said, nothing. Tiptoeing around our ticking time bomb of a president, as if one wrong move would cause him to go off. Guess what? He went off. And the carnage has been devastating to our country, and sure to have repercussions for years to come. Impassioned speeches from the Senate floor after an attack on our Capitol after you have spent four years endorsing a racist, hateful, ignorant bigot, is not going to cut it either. Someone in this party needs to take a stand. Someone needs to stand up and say that while Trumpism may have filled a few of our coffers, and increased the reach of our party, this is just WRONG. The Republican Party as of now is a toxic mix of compliant, cowardly, kiss ass, losers. The only way to save this party is to get rid of Trumpism. Start over. You need new blood. Someone needs to take a stand and fight for the future of this party because right now, the outlook looks bleak.

Now don’t get me wrong, I may identify as a Democrat, but that doesn’t mean that I think everything they do is right. I don’t trust politicians. Never have, never will. I see them as a necessary evil. Politicians, while some may care about the will of the people, are always looking out for themselves, and their agendas. Now, while it may seem like it was encouraging that some Republicans changed course at the last minute and reversed decisions they had made to challenge the Electoral College Votes, in a move that was surely against their constituents. It was only done after an attack was made on our Capitol. While some deem it political courage to change the course, I see it as trying to maintain as much political capital as possible. I find it inconceivable that some of these Senators even considered objecting the results of an election that even Trump-appointed officials could not find fraud in, even after the leader of their party the very day the vote was scheduled to occur, lambasted and ridiculed Republican lawmakers, calling them “the weak Republicans” in his speech that day. But even they couldn’t stand by as Trump incited a riot, encouraging his followers with these words:

“We’re going walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women,” Trump said. “We’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them, because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength.”

Followers, who after hearing this decided the best thing to do would be to march down to the Capitol, overpower police, and proceed to vandalize, terrorize and endanger the lawmakers in the building, many of whom were Republicans. I’m sure when they emerged from their various hiding places, watched as glass and blood was cleaned from the floors of the federal building, and heard reports of injuries and death as a result of the riot, they probably thought it was in poor taste to continue to reject the outcome of the election when doing so had just literally put their lives in danger. At the hand of who? The man who they had spent the last four years catering, cowering, and bowing down to, in hopes of gaining some political capital.

C’mon Man.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what the best thing to do here would be. Reject any and everything that has to do with Trump. You can’t be a Senator or Representative forever, do you not want a life after your time in office? Who’s going to want to hire someone who enabled the tyrannical rantings of a fool? He couldn’t handle a legal and fair defeat, so he turned to incite riots and insurrection. Treason? This cannot be what you want your party to stand for. I refuse to believe it. I want better for you. Make some changes, take a stand, shake it up, and break it up. There is life after politics. Save yourself, and your soul. Do the right thing.
